There are variations in the spelling of the Cosstick name and also in John Edmund's forenames. His birth records show him as John Edmund Cosstick and his military and marriage records show him as Edmund John Costick.
He enlisted in the AIF on 17 January 1916 and embarked for overseas on 18 May 1916 with the 26th Battalion. He saw service in France and Belgium but suffered illness and was sent to England on a number of occasions. He was finally returned to Australia on 20 October 1918.
While in England he met his future wife Catherine Buchanan, a Scot and they were married on 10 October 1918 in the Kingston District which takes in parts of Surrey and Middlesex. They were both living in London at the time. They had a child Margaret who was born in 1919 in Larbert, Scotland which was where her parents were living at the time of their deaths. It appears that Catherine remained in the UK when Edmund returned to Australia and was living with her parents at the time of her daughter's birth. After the birth she joined Edmund in Australia. She died in Brisbane on 27 October 1960.
