50 years ago today, on the 23rd April 1971, Private William Amos Christie, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-995), baker and business manager from Maitland Road, Islington, New South Wales and 65A Bolton Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 98 Beaumont St, Hamilton, N.S.W. and Northcote Avenue, Swansea Heads, N.S.W., father of two (Beryl and Dallas), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. CATHOLIC 3-95. 47.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 29th March 1890 to William Edward and Bridget Mary Christie; husband of Hilda Agnes Christie nee Shipley (married 1921, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1980?), William enlisted August 1914 at Kensington, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 18.8.1916 (shell shock), and admitted to hospital 2.8.1916 (skin disease), 20.4.1917 (trench feet), 5.4.1918 (scabies), William returned home July 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 24th September 1918.

Mr Christie’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Newcastle District Tramway Employees Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle Operative Bakers' Society Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country. CATHOLIC 3-95. 47.

Also served 2nd A.I.F. (NX848, 2/1st Field Regiment, enlisted 8.11.1939, discharged medically unfit 16.11.1942).
