Charles enlisted in the 6th reinforcements 4th Battalion on 5 June 1915, sailed from Sydney on the 16 June and joined the unit at Gallipoli on the 4 August 1915. He was shell shocked during the Lone Pine battle and evacuated to Egypt. He was returned to Australia for a change in September 1915. Luckily for his young family, his entire war lasted for only 3 months.
