Son of Frederick John Chaffer and Martha Chaffer of Undercliffe Road, Undercliffe, NSW. Brother of Frank William  Chaffer who returned to Australia on 7 February 1920 having served with the 4th Battalion

During 1928c Henry married Hannah B. Edgerton-Anderton in Paddington, NSW
