Edward was the eldest of three brothers to enlist for service in the First World War. He joined the 1st AIF on 14 September 1914, and his unit was among the covering force for the Anzac landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Later serving on the Western Front, Pte. Mundy returned to Australia after the war and was discharged on 16 March 1919.
His two younger brothers, 3204 Pte Reginald James (Reg) Mundy, 28th Battalion was killed at Pozieres and 2944 Pte William Harold (Billy) Mundy, 48th Battalion, was killed at Dernancourt in 1918. Both died at 20 years of age and neither has a known grave.
