Warracknabeal Herald (Vic.) Friday 17 November 1916 p 3 [sic]:
“PTE. GARDINER GETTING ON WELL. Pte. R. J, Gardiner, writing from the General Hospital, at Colchester, England, on September 24th, stated that he was getting on well, and expected to be shifted to the Australian Convalescent Home, at Uxbridge. He says the Germans sent over another lot of Zeppelins the night previous to writing, and he believes they went back three short. One came down about three miles away, and he could hear the aircraft guns going all night. The wounded were to be taken out to inspect it. In a later letter Pte. Gardiner stated that he had been removed to the Australian Home, which was a very nice place, and the people were most kind. They came round in motor cars and took the wounded out driving. One place visited was Westminster.”
Returned to Australia 8 April 1917
