Mrs Thake of the Garrison, Purfleet was notified that her brother had died of wounds received in action. He sustained Machine Gun bullet wounds to the left thigh on 8th August which required amputation of his leg..He was 22 and had enlisted 10th August 1917. He had been a fireman on various ships.His death was reported in the Grays and Tilbury Gazette issue of 24 August 1918

He is commemorated on the St Clement’s Church War Memorial in West Thurrock.Also on that memorial is Sapper A. Lighten of the 15th Field Coy. Australian Engineers, another local man who had emigrated to Australia.
