An item in The Mount Alexander Mail on 20 April 1916 informed readers that John McInnes was about to leave for the front and that a few of his friends and well-wishers were giving a social and presentation.
Readers also learned that he was a popular young man who had been his mothers' support for many years, but that he felt he could, "no longer allow others to bear his responsibility".
Pte McInnes died of bronchial pneumonia on 31 December 1916 at Mericourt, France, and is remembered on the Redesdale Mechanics' Instutute Honour Roll and the Sutton Grange War Memorial, Vic.
