Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

“Born on 17 December 1895 in Warrnambool, the son of Alfred and Gladys (Walker) Dean, Alfred was educated at Kew State School and The Geelong College in 1908-09.  He entered the Royal Military College Duntroon spending two years there, but failing his examinations.

He was serving in the Melbourne University Rifles when he enlisted on 24 March 1916, aged 21, at Warrnambool and embarked on HMAT A28 Maltiades on 1 August 1916.  He embarked for France from England on 19 November 1916 and was attached to the 6th Machine Gun Company.

Regarding his death, Pte Hugh C Reid of Broadford wrote to the Red Cross Information Bureau, telling of the circumstances at Second Bullecourt on 3 May 1917:
“Killed at Bullecourt near Railway Embankment and I helped bury him behind the old front line on 3 May.  I put a cross up over him. Padre said he would send his effects back to his people”.

Alfred’s Casualty Sheet with his official record notes that he was buried in the vicinity of Bullecourt. His grave however was lost before it could be registered by the Grave Registration Unit, thus his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
