Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

75 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 9th May 1949, Private John Vincent Sexton, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-6819), motor driver from Branxton, New South Wales and 29 Valencia Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-34. 7.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 10th May 1888 to John and Margaret Sexton; husband of Beatrice Mary Sexton nee Kerr (married 1921, Singleton, N.S.W., died 27.9.1947, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 55, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 22nd July 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT SS Port Nicholson on the 8th November 1916.

Wounded in action - 2.10.1917 (GSW back & right thigh, severe).

Admitted to hospital 13.10.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 31.1.1918.

John arrived home on the 15th April 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 23rd May 1918.

Mr. Sexton’s name has been inscribed on the Greta & Branxton Municipal Roll of Honor and the Branxton Memorial Rotunda.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died 8/5/1949.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
