Biography contributed by Modbury High School

William Joseph Hedley Patterson was born in 1897 in Williamstown, South Australia. This period of his life is less documented; however, like the other young men of his generation, he probably used to have local jobs and engaged in community activities before the war broke out.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on the 6th of March 1916 at Adelaide, South Australia. He was assigned to the 48th Australian Infantry Battalion and departed for overseas service aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 11 April 1916.

He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and Awarded a Military Medal in 1917 for bravery and devotion to duty under fire. He was deployed in the 48th Battalion and was raised in Egypt on the 16th of March 1916 as part of the doubling of the AIF.

Patterson returned to Australia from England on 2 June 1919. He was discharged 28 August 1919. He died in 1975 is buried at North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth.
