Lance Corporal John James Death (Service No:2439) enlisted in the AIF on 12 July 1915 as a Private with 54 Coy, and was attached to 21st Battalion on 29 September 1915 when he embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Osterley. Promoted to Lance Corporal in England on 9 January 1917, he was attached to 1st Command Depot on 10 September 1917 when he embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Ulysses. Lance Corporal Death was hospitalised in Melbourne before Discharge (Permanently Medically Unfit) on 12 June 1918 - 21st Infantry Battalion.
John was born in London, England in 1873, seventh of twelve children of Edward Albert Death (b1844 in London, England) and Elizabeth Susan Green (b1845 in London, England). Edward (a Labourer) and Elizabeth (a House Servant) married in 1862 in London, where they settled and raised their family and Edward worked as a Packer and Labourer.
John was a Carman in London in 1895, when he married Margaret Bedelia Vance (b1875 in Dublin, Ireland). John and Margaret lived in London, where John worked as a Tramway Motorman. John immigrated in 1913, and Margaret and the children followed in 1914, arriving in Melbourne on board the Norseman. John and Margaret settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and John worked as a Motorman/Electric Car Driver and Dealer. In the 1920s they changed their surname from 'Death' to 'Deeth". Margaret died in 1950 and John in 1954.
