Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 30th April 1918, Private John Leslie York, referred to as Les, 56th Battalion (Reg No-3926), wheeler from Edden Street, Bellbird, New South Wales, father of one (Madge, born 24.2.1915, Wickham, N.S.W., married? 1937, Cessnock, N.S.W., died?), was Killed in Action at Villers-Bretonneux, France, age 25. Cause of death unknown.

No Roll of Honour circular submitted.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Jesmond, New South Wales on the 3rd April 1893 to John (died 9.12.1915, Sydney Hospital, N.S.W., age 50) of 32 William Street, Carrington, New South Wales, and Jane York nee Mitchell (died 15.8.1923, Wickham, N.S.W., age 54, mother of 2, not listed on Sandgate Cemetery database or Find a Grave) of 32 William Street, Carrington, New South Wales; husband of Euphemia York nee McLean (married 11.7.1914, Stockton, N.S.W., remarried 1925, Waratah, N.S.W. to William Pearce, died?, Euphemia died?) of 32 William Street, Carrington, New South Wales, Les enlisted on the 7th December 1916 with the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th January 1917.

Mr. York is resting at Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot V Row E Grave 2.

Les’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, Carrington Memorial Gates, Book of Gold and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Bellbird Honour Roll.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised York gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Les for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-01. 110.
