Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

80 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 15th June 1945, Private James Stanley Withers, 53rd Battalion (Reg No- 1610A), labourer from West Maitland, New South Wales and 26 Clara Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 55. CATHOLIC 2-64. 50.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 17th March 1890 to Joseph Vincent and Margaret Mary Withers nee Sullivan, from West Tamworth, N.S.W. and Gidley Street, West Maitland, N.S.W.; husband of Eva Withers nee Baxter, married 1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 15.12.1947, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 53, sleeping here, James enlisted on the 15th March 1916 with the 33rd Battalion at Armidale, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A74 Marathon on the 4th May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.

Transferred to 53rd Battalion 30.9.1916.

Granted leave to England from 19.11.1917 to 5.12.1918 and 19.10.1918 to 4.11.1918.

Wounded in action 28.4.1918 - (not stated, remained at duty), 29.7.1918 (GSW or SW right forearm).

Commenced return to Australia 31.3.1919.

James arrived home invalided on the 16th May 1919, being discharged on the 30th June 1919.

Mr. Withers’s name has not been inscribed on the West Maitland and District Roll of Honor or the West Maitland Superior Public School Roll of Honour or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at James’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Clarence Septimus Withers, also known as Clarrie or Clarry, born 4.9.1898, Tamworth, New South Wales, labourer from West Tamworth, New South Wales, enlisted 27.12.1915, discharged, underage, re-enlisted 17.4.1916, 33rd Battalion, Reg No-1615, RTA 14.2.1919, 53rd Battalion, died 15.7.1955, age 56, officially commemorated – https://connect.dva.gov.au/.../viewCommemoration.html..., also resting at the cemetery - CATHOLIC 2-67. 31.
