Biography

Patrick Joseph Ormonde was just 18 years old when he enlisted in Cloncurry, Qld, Australia on 5/4/1916. He enlisted alongside his older brother, James who was 20 years old. Their cousin, William Alexander Lilley, also enlisted in the same town and on the same day. The brothers served in the same Battalion (9th Btn, 20th Reinforcement). Their mother died aged 35 when the boys were young, Patrick was 13 and James was 15. They had their dad, Patrick. One can only imagine what their dad went through with two sons away in the war. Only one son would come home to him. Patrick had just turned 20 when he was reported as missing in action after a conflict at Polygon Wood, Belgium on 20/9/1917. At a Court of Enquiry held on 8/4/1918, it was determined he was killed in action. A fellow solder said he saw Patrick when they were going into action. When they came out, Patrick was not with them. The fellow solder's mates told him, Patrick was killed. His body was never recovered so his grave is unknown. He is commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 17, Belgium.
