Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William McLeod was one of four sons of Peter and Susan McLeod of Caralulup, Victoria who enlisted in the AIF.

William and his brother Duncan McLeod both enlisted in Queensland on the same day, 29 July 1915. They were living and working at Tara, in the Darling Downs of Queensland. William married to Helena Ruby Graham only a month before he embarked for overseas.

He and his brother Duncan both transferred to the 49th Battalion from the 9th Battalion during February 1916. William was killed in action during the last attack by the Australians on the formidable Mouquet Farm strongpoint during September 1916. Duncan was badly wounded during the same battle and evacuated to England.

William’s three brothers all returned to Australia during 1919.
