Biography contributed by John Oakes
Alfred JONES (Service Number 3814) was born on 19th April 1883 at Everton, Liverpool, England. He was casually employed as a tram conductor from 21st November 1911. He became permanent in 1912.
Jones enlisted at Holdsworthy (now Holsworthy) on 14th August1915 and was allotted to the 12th Reinforcements to the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion. He was unmarried and gave his mother living in Ayrshire, Scotland as his next of kin.
He left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Medic’ on 30th December 1915 and, after a brief period in Egypt, embarked at Alexandria for Marseilles (France) and the Western Front. He was taken on the strength of the 3rd Battalion on 25th May 1916.
He was wounded in action, at Pozières, between 22nd and 27th July. This gunshot wound to his arm caused his evacuation to England on the Hospital Ship ‘St Patrick’ and treatment for three months at the Graylingwell War Hospital at Chichester.
It was not until January 1917 that he re-joined the 3rd Battalion. He was given leave in England a year later in January 1918.
After his return to France he was killed in action on 23rd March 1918. There are several reports of his death and they all agree.
Private A Law (6526) reported:
‘Two miles in front of Hill 60, some time in March. Jones was out on patrol work with 9 other men, about midnight. A minenwerfer bomb landed on the ten men and blew Jones to pieces and wounded three others. I was ten yards from them. We closely searched spot for trace of Jones but found nothing.
He was a tram driver in Sydney. His people live in Scotland. Age about 32: tall: greyish hair: clean shaven.’
The official documents do include a note that he was buried at Verbiandenmolen and the map reference was recorded. However, Jones has no known grave. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
- based on the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll and notes for the Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board.
