Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Herbert was the son of Charles John and Harriet Josephine Hamilton, of Garah, New South Wales. He was born and raised in Moree, New South Wales.

His older brother, 1090 Pte Clive Stanley Hamilton 45th Battalion was killed in action in Belgium on 6 October 1916, aged 23. Another brother, 1127 Pte Charles Leslie Hamilton M.M., also of the 1st Light Horse Regiment, returned to Australia in 1919.

Herbert arrived on Gallipoli during July 1915 and was killed in action 7 August 1915. In support of the August offensive, a charge was made by the 1st Light Horse Regiment from Popes Hill towards the Chessboard, by about two squadrons, or 200 men. There were heavy casualties, almost fifty men killed and ninety wounded. Herbert Percival Hamilton has no known grave.
