From Australian Remembrance Army
Gunner Carl Holmstadt (Service No. 31926), an Australian World War One veteran, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now marked with a plaque in recognition of their service for Australia.
We unveiled his plaque in Lutwyche Cemetery on 23 September 2023, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Carl Holmstadt was born in Skona, Sweden, in 1882 to Nilsson Holmstadt and Ida Smedman. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Longreach, Queensland, on 7 August 1916, aged 34, stating his occupation as a well borer and nominating his sister in Sweden as his next of kin. On 10 February 1917, he embarked for overseas service with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade aboard RMS Osterley from Sydney. He disembarked at Plymouth, England, in April 1917 and proceeded to France in August that year.
In October 1918, he sustained a severe gunshot wound to his right leg while serving in France and was transferred to England for treatment. In December 1918, he embarked for return to Australia aboard the troopship HMT Orontes and was discharged from the AIF on 19 March 1919.
Following his return to Australia, he was recorded as living in Winton in 1931, where he was employed as a labourer. In later years, he resided in Brisbane and continued to work as a labourer. In December 1935, while living in South Brisbane, he wrote to Army Base Records requesting the issue of his service medals, which were subsequently forwarded to him.
Gunner Carl Holmstadt died on 11 November 1949, aged 67, and was buried in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. He was a single man who had no known children.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
