Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Colin Graham Lutton was born on 30 August 1898. He grew up in Randwick, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Colin was the son of Mrs. Annie Lutton.(1) He attended Sydney Technical High School from 1913 to 1915(2), where he excelled in engineering and was awarded for his achievements in this field. Lutton had green eyes and worked as a clerk before enlisting in the military.(3)

Lutton enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 8 August 1915.(4) Although he was actually 16 years old at the time, he stated on his enlistment papers that he was 18, eager to serve his country during World War I. On 2 November 1915, Lutton embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Euripides, heading to the battlefields of the First World War.(5) Initially serving as a Private. Lutton's roles included those of a gunner and driver. He was a soldier, performing the essential and dangerous tasks necessary on the front lines.

On 28 July 1916, Lutton was wounded in action and transferred to a hospital for treatment. Despite these injuries, he returned to his battalion and continued to serve with distinction.(8)Colin Graham Lutton was honored with the Military Medal on 26 June 1918, recognizing his bravery and leadership in the field. On the night of June 23rd/24th, south-west of Meteren, during the Battle of Belleau Wood, Lutton, was the lead operator of a Lewis Gun as the platoon advanced in an attack. This battle was an important victory for the allies as they defeated and prevented further German advances through France. Upon reaching the first objective, the enemy was clearly ready to resist. Despite being wounded, this Lutton boldly moved forward with his gun and fired from the hip, taking down several enemy soldiers. His actions were crucial in helping the platoon achieve their objective and demonstrate exceptional bravery and initiative, deserving of the highest commendation.(9) He was awarded the Military Medal.

Lutton returned to Australia on 25 January 1919, (11) following the end of World War I, Upon his return, Lutton resumed his life in Randwick. He continued working as a clerk.

Lutton continued his dedication to military service by enlisting again during World War II, serving from 20 April 1943 to 29 March 1945.(10)

Despite his significant achievements and bravery during the wars, not much is known about his personal hobbies or whether he had a family. Colin Graham Lutton passed away on 13 November 1975 at the age of 77.(13) He left behind a legacy of courage and service, remembered through his Military Medal and the stories of his bravery.
