Bombardier Leslie Robert Nelson (Service No:3066) enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914 as a Driver with 1st Divisional Ammunition Column. He departed for Gallipoli from Fremantle on 2 November 1914 on board Transport A7 Medic. On 21 November 1915 he was transferred to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade at Gallipoli Peninsula, and by December that year was in France where he was promoted to Bombardier on 11 September 1918. Bombardier Nelson embarked from Taranto in Italy for the RTA on board HT Port Sydney. Bombardier Nelson was Discharged on 23 January 1919.

Born in 1894 at El Dorado in Victoria, Les was the third of twelve children of Alfred (Alf) Nelson (b1864 in Roxburghshire, Scotland) and Amy Kate Stoyel (b1871 in Devon, England). Alf was a Coach Body Builder before immigrating to Brisbane, QLD in 1885 and Amy immigrated in 1889, arriving in Brisbane on board the Merkara. Alf (a Coach Builder) and Amy married in Brisbane, QLD in 1890 and by 1892 had moved to Melbourne, Victoria and then El Dorado Gold Mines in Victoria. In 1895 Alf and Amy moved their family to WA, where Alf worked as a Coach Builder and Carpenter at Midland Junction, in country WA and Perth. Amy and the children settled in Leederville, Perth and for many years Alf travelled to country regions to work.

Les was a Machinist in Perth WA in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF and was working in Perth as a Conductor with the WAGR in 1924 when he married Jean Evelyn Tucker (b1903 in Northumberland, England) - Jean immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Belgic. Les and Jean settled in Perth where Les worked as a Carpenter, Fireman and Salesman. Les died in 1974.
