Son of William Anthony NEWLAND and Lousia Jane nee WALL, Doveton, Vic.
On his return to Australia, Bert rejoined the Victorian Police Force becoming Sergeant of both Queenscliff and Geelong police stations before moving to St Kilda. Here he took up position as Sergeant of the First Shrine Guard at the new Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance and fought to wear the Light Horse uniform instead of the police uniform.
He married Catherine Milne Scott (1869-1956) in 1920. The 1919 Australian Census has them living at 265 Mitchell Street, Brunswick, Victoria. Herbert's occupation on the census was listed as Constable. His brother Redvers was living with them and his occupation was also listed as Constable.
