Thomas Kelly was wounded in action at Bullecourt on 7 May 1917. He suffered severe injuries to his left leg and thigh. Though he was quickly removed to a General Hospital in Rouen, France, he died of his wounds just over three weeks later.
His older brother, 3846 Pte. William Philip John Kelly 49th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Noreuil on 5 April 1917, age 25.
