Alexander was the sixth of seventeen children of Thomas (Tom) Alexander McKenzie (born 1851 at 'Little Scotland; in Geelong, Victoria and second wife Elizabeth Davies (born 1863 in Batesford, Victoria). When he was 12 years of age, Tom worked cutting timber with his family at Eclipse Creek near Meredith, Victoria and later was a Carter with his bullock team. Following the death of his first wife, Tom married Elizabeth in 1883 at Meredith, Colac, Victoria. In 1912 Tom and Elizabeth moved to South Gippsland where they share-farmed before finally settling at Wonga near Foster in South Gippsland, Victoria. Tom died chasing pigs to market on horseback in 1924, and Elizabeth died in 1936.

Alexander was a Farm Labourer in Ballan, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF in December 1915. He served as a Private, Gunner and Driver (Service No:14176) and was WiA (Gassed) in France in 1918. He was a Driver with 1st Field Artillery Brgade when he was Discharged in May 1919. Brother John James (Private, Service No:3889) was KiA in 1916 in France; brothers Frederick (Fred) Vincent (Private, Service No:V1976) and Douglas (Pat) Patrick (Private, Service No:VX5160); and son William (Bill) Thomas (Private, VX53319) served in WWII.

In November 1919 at Meeniyan in Victoria, Alexander married Marion (Kitty) Kate Crole (born 1897 in Meeniyan, Victoria). They settled at Gunyah via Boolarrah in Gippsland, Victoria where Alexander was a Farmer. Following their retirement, Alexander and Kitty moved to Newhave in Philip Island, Victoria where Alexander died in 1972 and Kitty in 1976.
