War Service/Promotions: Robert's ship Ajana was delayed at Bombay, India, due to extreme heat, and the horses needed to be rested. However the ship struck a lock gate and was delayed for a week for repairs. Robert sent a photo of the ship to his brother Maurice from Bombay. They continued to Suez and the troops were then railed to Heliopolis, where they joined the Australian camp. In four postcards to his mother, and sisters Maude and Clarine, Robert described how lots were drawn to proceed to the Dardanelles, but Robert and 21 others had to stay behind to care for the horses and train them for work with the waggons (1915 spelling). Additional horses were brought to them for training. On 24 February 1916, Robert transferred from 5th Field Ambulance to 15th Field Ambulance, Egypt, and on 18 June 1916 they went to Alexandria, proceeding to Marseilles, France and then to the Western Front. He was reported sick to Hospital on 27 November 1916, rejoining his unit 29 November 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal (Stationary 14th Field Ambulance) France, on 18 April 1917. He returned to France 2 July 1918, to 15th Australian Field Ambulance, and then to Australian General Base Hospital. By 28 December 1918, the Australian Corps Reinforcements were awaiting return to Australia. Back to England 2 January 1919 (with 1915 personnel).
