Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

The late Mr Walter Arthur Cartledge, whose death was announced on October 7th, served in the first A.I.F. for four and a half years, with the 14th Battalion and 1st Divisional  Train, and enlisted in the permanent Royal Australian Air Force in 1921 and went overseas with the Service in 1939. He was commissioned in 1942 and became Adjutant of No.  452 Spitfire Squadron. Returning to Australia in 1942, he was appointed Station Adjutant of No. 1 Bombing and Air Gunnery School at Point Pirie, and eventually RAAF Station at  Point Cook. He rose to the rank of Flight-Lieutenant and was mentioned in Despatches for his devotion to duty with No. 10 Squadron during the "blitz" on Plymouth and was  awarded the Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. His retirement in 1946 was due to ill health. The Cremation ceremony was attended by over three hundred people,  including many from Headquarters and his fellow-service men. The late Mr Cartledge was a son of the late Fred and Eva Cartledge, and brother of Harry (Queensland), Mrs. Bott and Mrs. Hawkins,  of Sale, and Fred, of Melbourne.
