Lance Corporal Edward Monk (Service No:3526) enlisted in the AIF on 5 August 1915 and was a Private attached to 16th Infantry Battalion on 1 November 1915 when he embarked from Fremantle on board HMAT A24 Benalla. Private Monk served in Egypt and France as a Gunner and Driver. Lance Corporal Monk embarked from England for the RTA on 6 July 1920 on board the Kigoma, and was attached to 4th Divisional Artillery at Discharge on 12 October 1920.

Born in Essex England in 1889, Edward was the third of nine children of William Daniel Monk (b1856 in Arkesden, Essex, England) and Sarah Law (b1861 in Clavering, Essex). Daniel (a Farm Labourer) and Sarah married in 1884 in Saffron Walden, Essex and settled at Clavering where they raised their family and William worked as an Agricultural/Farm Labourer and Farm Horseman.

Edward started work as a Farm Hand in Clavering Essex and immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Armadale. He was working as a Teamster in Brookton WA when he enlisted in the AIF in 1914. In 1919 in Suffolk England, Edward (a Soldier) married Helen Spalding (b1899 in London). Edward was Discharged from the Army in 1920, and Helen arrived in Fremantle WA in 1920 on board the Kigoma. Edward and Helen settled at Latham via Kalgoorlie WA, where they raised their family and Edward was a Farmer. Helen died in 1946 and Edward in 1965.
