Pte 1001 Arthur Edward Symes died of wounds sustained at Lone Pine on 1 September 1915 (GSW arm, back & leg, arm amputated). He died on board HSNZ Maheno on 4 September 1915 en route to Lemnos and was buried at the East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
Commemorated in White Hills Cemetery, Victoria. Headstone reads: 'Anzac Hero He rose responsive to his country's call/He gave his life, his best, his all'.
Parents: John (d. 21 April 1914, aged 79; bu. White Hills Cemetery) and Jane SYMES (d. 30 May 1934, aged 70; bu. White Hills Cemetery).
