Died on this date – 17th January…… William Rice Ross was born in Edinburgh, Scotland around 1882.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 1st April, 1916 stating he was a 28 year old, single, Motor Mechanic from Franklin Street, Adelaide, South Australia.
Private William Ross, Service number 1701, embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Afric (A19) on 9th June, 1916 & disembarked at Southampton, England on 24th July, 1916. Private Ross had been admitted sick to Ship’s Hospital on the journey over to England on 18th June, 1916 & again on 4th July, 1916.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
He was taken on strength with 11th Training Battalion, Durrington, Wiltshire on 7th August, 1916.
On 25th August, 1916 was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire & again on 9th September, 1916 with fractured hand.
Private William Ross was admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital at Bulford, Wiltshire on 19th October, 1916. He was transferred to Parkhouse & on 21st November, 1916 transferred to Codford Camp No. 3, Wiltshire.
On 14th December, 1915 Private Ross was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire with Influenza & was reported to be seriously ill on 15th December, 1916 with Pneumonia.
Private William Ross died at 4.15 a.m. on 17th January, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from Pneumonia.
He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
