The son of Charles and Caroline Johns of Derby, Tasmania.
Charles's father also enlisted with the Remount Unit and served in Egypt for six months at well over 50 years of age. Another brother, 15224 Thomas Johns 13th Field Artillery Brigade, enlisted at 17 years of age and returned to Australia unharmed.
