Clarence was the eldest of four children of Samuel Pearce Edwards (b1872 in Clunes, Victoria) and Louisa Haughton (b1873 in Daylesford, Victoria). Samuel (a Baker) and Louisa married in 1894 in Melbourne, Victoria and settled in Clifton Hills in Melbourne where they raised their family. Samuel was a Tramways Employee.

Clarence was a Salesman in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916 - he had served in the Senior Cadets (Abbotsford) and the Militia. Clarence was a Private (Service No:5680) with 5th Infantry Battlaion and 3rd Infantry Brigade HQ (Brigade Band). He was Discharged in August 1919.

Returning to Melbourne, Victoria Clarence worked as a Saleman, living in St Arnaud and Mildura in the Wimmera in the late 1920s and ealry 1930s and working as a Salesman and Shop Assistant. In the mid 1930s Clarence returned to Melbourne and was a Shop Assistant in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V83015). He was attached to 3 District Canteen Service when he was Discharged in June 1941.

Clarence was working as a Labourer in Melbourne when he died in 1957.
