Robert Shakel Edwards Regimental No. 940 was born at Copperhouse, Kooringa, South Australia on the 7th December, 1896. His parents were Elizabeth (nee Stark) & William Edwards. He grew up as a young boy and lived in Copperhouse where he attended the public school there. He worked as a labourer on various farms nearby before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces on the 28th November, 1914 as a Private. He joined the unit 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 5th Reinforcement which embarked at Adelaide per HMAT A59 "Botanist" on the 2nd June, 1915.
On the 25th October 1915 he joined the 3rd Light Horse at Gallipoli. he was found guilty of sleeping at his post on the 9th November 1915 and was awarded 3 months Field Punishment No.2 and foreiture of 109 days pay. He disembarked at Alexandria from Gallipoli on the 20th December, 1915.
On the 29th December 1915 he joined the Western Frontier Force. He was found guilty on the 29th january 1915 of conduct prejudicial to good conduct and military discipline in that he answered an officer in an insolent manner and was awarded 28 days Field Punishment N0.2 and forfeiture of 28 days pay.
He was admitted to hospital (septic throat) on the 27th July 1916 and rejoined his unit on the 3rd August 1916. He was then detached for railway construction between the 5th - 28th July and 27th August to the 0th October 1917. He was then admitted to hospital (neurasthenia) on the 3rd November 1917 and was discharged from hospital on the 26th November 1917.
On the 27th November 1917 taken on strength joined the 1st light Horse Regiment. He then transferred back to 3rd Light Horse on 2nd January, 1918. He was detached to School of Instruction on the 14th September 1918 and rejoined unit on the 14th October, 1918.
The unit commenced their return to Australia on the 15th May 1919 and disembarked in Australia on the 26th June, 1919. He was then discharged on the 26th August, 1919.
He received the following service medals:- 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, War Medal and the Australian Service Medal.
War service: Egypt, Gallipoli.
Robert Shakel Edwards also served in World War II as a Sergeant S212768. He enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia on the 10th January 1940 and joined the 4th Garrison Battalion. He then transferred to the 25th Works Company on the 5th October 1942 to 34th Works Company on the 25th January 1946. He was discharged on the 6th June 1947.
