An Original Anzac of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

55 years ago today, on the 4th July 1966, Corporal George Arthur Ernest Pearce, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No’s 888 & 173), rail fireman from Bourke Street, Goulburn, New South Wales and 2 Elizabeth Street, Paddington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. CATHOLIC 3. 90. 114.

Born at Paddington, New South Wales on the 18th December 1886 to Charles Henry and Mary Anne Pearce nee Dwyer; husband of G A Pearce, of 130 Varden Street, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, George enlisted August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.

Wounded in action 8.5.1915 (right forefinger blown off), George was invalided home on the 29th July 1915.

Discharged medically unfit on the 22nd May 1916.
Reenlisted 22.12.1916, (1st Railway section) Victoria Barracks, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 19.10.1917 (GSW right hand, mild), George returned home January 1920, being discharged medically unfit on the 28th February 1920.
Mr. Pearce’s name has been inscribed on the Goulburn District Railway Employees 1914-1919 Honor Roll.

I located George resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so February 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Many thanks to Michelle Foster for the extensive family history.

Older brother Charles Henry (9th Battalion, Reg No-186, born 1878, Coburg, Victoria, died 1958, Magill, South Australia), resting at the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Mr. Pearce.

Lest We Forget.
