Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Digger of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

49 years ago today, on the 5th December 1973, Gunner Leonard Frederick Phipps, 14th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-23291), shop assistant from Clifford Avenue, Manly, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. ANGLICAN 1-28A. 92.

Born at Manly, New South Wales on the 5th February 1892 to Harry and Amy Phipps; husband of Violet D Phipps nee Nelson (married 1920, Manly, N.S.W., died 1946?), Leonard enlisted January 1916 with the 22nd Field Artillery (Howitzer) Brigade at Warren, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 13.11.1918 (haemorrhoids).

Leonard returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 5th September 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, welcome home, etc.

I have not located Mr. Phipps’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I located Leonard resting in an unmarked grave, so February 2021 I erected a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
