Francis John Charles Jarred SHERA, (Service Number 2440) wasn born at Maytown, Queensland about April 1892. He worked for the NSW Railways Traffic Branch.
Sheran enlisted at Liverpool on 8th June 1915 and gave his mother, Anne Case of North Sydney as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 4th Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Orsova’ on 14th July 1915 and reached Egypt a few weeks later. In October he boarded HT ‘Borda’ at Alexandria for passage to Gallipoli though he did not arrive there until 4th November when the campaign was winding down. He was back in Alexandria, via Mudros (on the Greek Island of Lemnos), on 29th December. In February he Absent Without Leave for which offence he was disciplined with 14 days Field Punishment No. 2 and the forfeiture of 17 days’ pay.
In March he left Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in France, aboard ‘Simla’, passing through Marseilles on 30th March 1916. In April he was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 17th May 1916 he was wounded with a gunshot to his left knee. This led to a cascade of medical transfers, to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, the 1st Australian Field Ambulance. No. 7 Ambulance Train, an unidentified Australian Hospital, the Hospital Ship ‘Newhaven’, the 3rd London General Hospital, the 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Woodcote Park Hospital and then a Military Convalescent Hospital. Nearly three months after the injury he had recovered and was granted furlough but was probably late returning for he was charged as being AWL. He was admonished by his Commanding Officer and forfeited two days’ pay. He did not re-join the 4th Battalion until 2nd October 1916. Later that month he was promoted to Temporary Corporal.
On 2nd February he was in hospital again, now with a ruptured muscle in his thigh. He admitted that it was the result of an accident sustained while not in the performance of military duty. The new cascade of medical admissions was the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 45th Casualty Clearing Station, Ambulance Train No. 7, No. 10 General Hospital, Hospital Ship ‘Western Australia’, and Southwark Military Hospital. In April he was discharged to furlough, though not fully fit, and thus passed through Camp Headquarters, No. 1 Command Depot, No. 3 Command Depot, No. 4 Camp, Perham Downs and Hurdcott before proceeding overseas to France through Southampton on 20th August 1917 and re-joining the Battalion on 31st August.
He was killed in action in Belgium a little more than a month later on 4th October 1917 in the attack on Brooksiende Ridge. A piece of shell penetrated his brain. Death was instantaneous and was buried three days later. After the war this grave could not be located and Sheran has no known grave. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Pensions were awarded to his sisters, Stella May Sheran (£1 per fortnight) and Ada Nellie Yuill (£2 per fortnight).
