Promoted to Lieutenant, 1 October 1916, in the 44th Battalion. He had been wounded on 8 August 1918 but returned to duty, a couple of days later.

His brother, 3017 Pte Robert Adam also of the 44th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action the previous month, 4 July 1918.
