Louis was the second son of the Colin John Stockley of Abercrombie Street, Redfern, Sydney, NSW and was one of three sons on active service.  He was born in Darlington in 1894, and educated at Cleveland Street Superior School.  He joined the reading staff of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1914.

Enlisting on October 25, 1915, he went as a Gunner with the 14th reinforcements for the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, and subsequently attained the rank of Bombadier.  He arrived in France on March 27, 1916, and ws in a number of engagements on the Somme and in the Ypres sector.  He was wounded a Zillebeke on September 1, 1917.  Rejoining his battery on November 5, he remained with it till the end of hostilities.
