Private James Patrick Cooke (Service No:3219) enlisted in the AIF on 13 March 1916, and was attached to 32nd Infantry Battalion on 27 June 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Devonport on board HMAT A57 Malakuta for service on the Western Front. Hospitalised with Influenza, Private Cooke was attached to 43rd Infantry Battalion on 22 February 1917 when he embarked from Arromouth for Port Adelaide on board HS Karoola. Private Cooke was attached to 43rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge (Medically Unfit) on 11 September 1917.
Eldest of six children, Jim was born in Kanmantoo, South Australia in 1882 to Patrick Cooke (b1858 in Wilunga, South Australia) and Anastasia (Annie) Critchley (b1856 in Adelaide, South Australia). Patrick and Annie married in 1881 in Kanmantoo, where they settled and raised their family. They were Publicans at the Kanmantoo Hotel in the 1880s, and Patrick later worked as a Blacksmith.
Jim was a Storekeeper's Assistant in Kanmantoo in 1916 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Jim returned to Kanmantoo, where he worked as a Storekeeper until his death in 1954.
