Herbert's parents were Arthur Herbert Gilbert and Harriet Mowlan. Herbert attended North Pine State School and his parents were living at North Pine prior to the war. His occupation was a carter and he served three years with the Moreton Regiment before he enlisted on 31 July 1915 in Brisbane. Herbert married Dorothy Davis in March 1919. Herbert died aged 91. Herbert had been one of a family of seven and the second of three brothers to enlist. The first was Horace [109] and Gordon [1655] was the last and was also killed.
