Austin enlisted in WW1 at the age of 17. So he could go off to war he enlisted his age as 21. Austin family did not know he enlisted in the war until after he left. He went off to war in 1916 and fought in Egypt & France. He was dangerously gassed in 1917 but thankfully recovered. Austin returned home after the war and lived his days out in the country town of Araluen.
