Archie was the ninth of eleven children of Ernest Marlin (born 1856 in Richmond NSW) and Laura Anne Kennedy (born 1859 in Richmond NSW). In 1875, as a member of the Richmond Volunteer Rifles (Regimental No:7886) Ernest received a Land Grant. A Carpenter and Builder, he married Laura in 1877 and they settled in Richmond to raise their family. In 1894 Ernest expanded the family business to provide funeral services, including coffins. Ernest was known as a keen athlete and cricketer, and was one of the oldest members of the Richmond Branch of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows. His eldest son Fred was eighteen years of age in 1896 when he hung himself in his father's business premises. Ernest died in 1915.
In 1913 Archie was a Letter Carrier (Postman) in Hornsby in Sydney NSW. He married Mary Letitia Bradley (born 1894 in London, England) in 1914 and in June 1916 he enlisted in the AIF. Archie was a Private (Service No:2728) with 5th Reinforcements 37th Infantry Battalion and 30th Infantry Battalion, and was WiA in 1917 (GSW to right leg). Archie was KiA at Villers Bretonneux, France in August 1918. Brother Bob (Trooper, Service No:548) served in the Boer War; and brothers Albert (Private, Service No:3140); Frank (Private, Service No:3154) KiA near Pozieres, France in 1916; and Bernard (Sergeant, Service No:1025) also served in WWI.
Archie's widow Mary remarried in 1922 and died in 1975.
