In Memory Of
In creating the video ‘You Never Came Home’, I made sure I included a person from every state in Australia. The soldier on this post came from Tasmania.
In Memory Of Lieutenant Raymond (Ray) Sherwin MC, 12th Battalion from Launceston, Tasmania.
He was a 23 year old clerk prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the AIF on the 24th of June 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne on the 8th of February 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda.
While serving on the Western Front, he was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry during operations at Pozieres, France between the 23rd and 26th of July 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 31st of July 1916.
Lieutenant Sherwin was killed in action at Boursies, France on the 8th of April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France, with others who have no known grave.
