William Libby Sibly was born in Willunga and, in 1906 married Lucy McRae of South Melbourne. At the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, he was 35 years old, weighed 134lbs (61kg) and stood 5'5" (167cm) tall. His eyes were blue and hair dark brown.

He embarked on 04 April 1916 with the 17th/7th Battalion Reinforcements and arrived in France via Egypt on 04 March 1917. On 13 May 1917 William was evacuated to England suffering nephritis and was eventually invalided home.

William later resided at East Melbourne and died on 04 August 1943 aged 63 years. Two of his brothers (James Oliver and Oswald Harrold) also served.
