Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Philip Henry Amber was born on the 17th of May 1891, in Hope Valley, South Australia. He had 7 sisters and 1 brother. Amber was 23 when he enlisted in the AIF on the 28th of January 1915. Before the war, he was a Gardener. He embarked from Australia 31/5/15.

Private Amber performed his training along with the rest of the 27th battalion in Egypt, but, after a couple of months, he was shipped off to Gallipoli. The 27th were not there long though, arriving in September, and leaving shortly afterwards with the rest of the evacuation party.

After that, he was then transferred out of the 27th infantry battalion, and into the 2nd Divisional signal company, where he became a Driver. The 2nd Div. spent a lot of time in Belgium and Northern France, laying down telephone cables to allow communication throughout the army.

On the 8th March 1917 he got into trouble - AWARD 3 days F. P. NO2. By CO2nd. ADSC. 7/3/17. appearing on Parade unshaven not comp. with an order to have hair cut

Here, we see that P. H. Amber was given 3 days Field Punishment Number 2 (F.P.NO2) by Colonel Second in Command (CO2nd), under Active Duty Service Commitment (ADSC) on the 8/3/1917. This was because on the previous day, he appeared at parade and had not had a haircut as he had been ordered.

After the war, he returned home, where he was married and had a daughter. He died in the 1940s.

He received these 3 medals

1914/15 Star: Awarded to anyone who served in the army of the British Empire during 1914 and 1915.

British War Medal: Awarded to all who served in the army of the British Empire during ww1

Victory Medal: Was issued to all who served in the army of the British Empire, be a part of certain voluntary organizations, and have entered any theatre of war from 1914 to 1918
