Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

George Alfred Yung, killed in action in France on the 20th of September, 1917, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Yung, for many years resident at Yendon, but now of Murtoa.

He was born on 10th May, 1892, and was trained at the Ballarat High School. He was appointed junior teacher at Ballan and Yendon, and then head teacher at Greenland Dam. He enlisted from the latter place in March, 1916, leaving, on official record, a reputation as a quiet, painstaking, conscientious worker.

After spending two months at Ballarat and Geelong camps, he was sent to Duntroon, and passed all examinations for a commission. After a further period at Ballarat as Sergeant, he was sent to the Royal Park Camp, where he remained until 19th February, 1917.

He then sailed in the Ballarat, which was torpedoed in the English Channel, not far from the English coast, on the 25th of April, 1917. After spending a few days at Salisbury, he was sent to Officers'

School at Tidworth, where he again passed for a commission, and was then sent to France. He was in the firing line only a few days before he was killed.
