Pte Albert Leslie William Chapman 10/08/1918
Les was born on the 04/11/1889 in Inkerman, near Port Lorne, South Aust.
He was the sixth child of nine children of Charles and Alice Chapman.
The Chapman family moved to Ravensthorpe, West. Aust. in 1896.
They were wheat and sheep farmers, Les worked with his Father and brothers on the family farm.
Les was a very active member of the Phillips River Rifle Club and at the time of his enlistment (at Ravensthorpe onthye 30/07/1915) he was the Captain of the Club.
On 22/11/1915 he embarked on the troop ship the RMS Mongolia at Fremantle for the Middle East, arriving at Alexander on 08/01/1916.
Further training took place at Serapeum and Gebel Habieta.
Then at Alexander on the 29/03/1916 he embarked on the SS Corsica bound for Marseille.
Les was wounded on two occasions, one being at Pozieres, and was repatriated to England on both occasions.
He was able to meet up with his brother Sgt Claude Chapman on several occasions while they were both in England.
In the summer of 1918 they saw quite a lot of each other while their units were in the Hazebrouck area.
Les was KiA at the battle of Lihons Hill.
Initially he was buried in an isolated grave 1 mile west north west of Lihons and 9 miles north west of Nesle.
His brother Sgt Edwin Claude Chapman 04/07/1918 is buried in Borre British Cemetery.
