Corporal Joseph Mervyn Woods (Service No:1628) enlisted in the AIF on 18 May 1915 and was a Private attached to 28th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Fremantle on 5 June 1915 on board HMAT A2 Geelong. Private Woods served in Egypt - Alexandria, Gallipoli Peninsula and Ismaela - before embarking for Marseilles, France in 1916. On 3 November 1916 Corporal Woods was WiA - GSW to left arm - and was evacuated to England. He embarked from Plymouth for Fremantle WA on 13 February 1917 on board HT Benalla and was Discharged on 17 September 1917. Sons David (LAC; Service No:84507) and Colin (Corporal; Service No:45813) and step son Albert (Flight Sergeant; Service No:406904) served in the RAAF in WWII.

Born in 1895 in Picton WA, Joseph was the second of seven children of John Michael Woods (b1866 in Bunbury, WA) and Mary Ann Banting (b1866 in Bunbury, WA). John (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1893 in Bunbury WA where they settled and raised their family and John worked as a Blacksmith.

Joseph started work as a Mechanical Engineer with Atlas Engineering Coy in Fremantle, WA and in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF was a Mechanical Engineer in Bunbury with Bendigo Brewery. In 1920 in Bunbury, Joseph married Muriel Saggers (nee Brittain; b1893 in Bunbury, WA) - Muriel was a Widow with a young son. Joseph and Muriel settled in Bunbury WA where they raised their family and Joseph worked as a Mechanical Engineer until his death in 1926. Muriel died in 1975.
