From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served bravely and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, have I been forgotten?
63 years ago today, on the 17th January 1958, Corporal Harold Ellicott (M.M.), 35th Battalion (Reg No-71), labourer from Oakhampton Road, West Maitland, New South Wales and 23 Kitchener Parade, Mayfield East, N.S.W., passed away, age 65.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 5th June 1892 to David and Ellen Priscilla Ellicott nee Beavis; husband of Dorothy Elizabeth Ellicott nee Avard (married 1920, East Maitland, N.S.W., died?), Harold enlisted November 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 13.10.1917 (GSW face, right shoulder, mild), 28.8.1918 (SW right side, severe - Harold was invalided home February 1919, being discharged on the 17th April 1919.
Mr Ellicott’s name has been inscribed on the Maitland and District Roll of Honor, West Maitland Congregational Church Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 6th August 1916, 94 names now inscribed, 12 Fallen - and the Oakhampton Public School Roll of Honour
Harold’s ashes were interred at Sandgate Cemetery on the 21st April 1958. ANGLICAN 3-162. 57.
Harold's son Milton Henry (Service No-N12767, born 1921, died 1942), is also resting here, and the tragic circumstances of his death was reported.
There is no plaque to tell us this Hero of The Great War is resting peacefully at the gravesite, so I have placed poppies to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
Older brother Kenneth (35th Battalion, Reg No-70, born 1888, KIA 4.4.1918
Younger brother Stanley (4th Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-1720, born 1897, died 1978) also served 1st A.I.F.
