Born at Leongatha, Victoria on the 5th March 1895 to Charles (died 1905) and Mary Ann Martin (COXHEAD) nee Tew of 265 Hay Street, Subiaco, W.A. and 152 Parry Street, Perth, W.A.; husband of Evelyn Martin nee Walmsley (a gifted soprano singer, married 1921, (as James), Newcastle, N.S.W., died?), Jim enlisted November 1915 at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia.

Admitted to hospital 21.2.1917 (groin abscess), 15.6.1917 (abscess left groin), 8.7.1918 (cellulitis right leg).

Jim returned home May 1919, being discharged on the 12th July 1919.
