James and his older brother joined the 12th Battalion in France around Christmas 1916. His brother 6592 Pte. Alan Maynard Pennycuick was killed in action at Lagnicourt sometime between 6/10 April, 1917, aged 26. James was shot and wounded in the thigh during the same battle but rejoined the 12th Battalion during May 1917.
They were the sons of John and Rosa Jane Pennycuick, of Broadmarsh, Tasmania.
